LaVern A Rhoades of Lindon passed away on the evening of Dec 25, 2009. LaVern was born Oct 27, 1918 to Carl A. and Estella Ivie Rhoades in Hanna Utah. He was raised in the Tabiona, Utah areas of Duchesne County. He graduated from Duchesne High School.
After graduation, he moved to Provo where he worked and attended two semesters at Brigham Young University before being called up with the first draft from Provo into the U.S. Army. He served his country during World War II from the beginning to the end. He served in North Africa, Sicily, on Utah Beach during the invasion of Normandy. He was there during most of the major battles in Europe, and continued marching into Germany. He was in Germany when the peace treaties were signed. He married Helen Lucille Pate on Aug 6, 1948 in the Logan Temple. He supported his family by working for 35 years at Geneva Steel, and running a small family farm in Lindon. There was never a shortage of work to be done, and he was never bashful about doing it. His life was dedicated to the well being of his wife and family, and to his faith as an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Besides the many other callings he held in the church, he and his sweetheartserved a mission on the reservations of South Dakota. He was always a hard reliable worker, and left every place he ever lived in better condition than he found it. He found great satisfaction and pleasure in working the family farm and in his woodworking projects. He was a great whistler and you would always find him whistling a tune as he worked. He truly appreciated the good friends and neighbors he had over the years. Lavern was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Lucile Farr, stepmother Alice Rose, and a grandson Tyson Hepting. He is survived by his wife Helen Rhoades; children and their spouses Carl E. (Dusty) Rhoades, Mesa, AZ; Candice Rhoades American Fork; Kathrine Rhoades, Lindon; Peggy (Joseph) Thornton, Syracuse; Diane (Michael) Hepting, Lindon; Boyd (Peggy) Rhoades, Lindon; 25 (Michael) Hepting, Lindon; Boyd (Peggy) Rhoades, Lindon; 25 Grandchildren, and 34 great grandchildren. The family would like to extend many thanks to friends and family who have helped in his care these last few months, especially to Harmony Health Care who have been of so much service. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Lindon Stake Center, 56 East 600 North, Lindon. Friends may attend a viewing Monday evening from 5-7 p.m. at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Lindon City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinmortuary.com.
