Milton Hoyt, 87, of Pleasant Grove, Utah, formerly of Hurricane, Utah, passed away at home on Saturday, February 6, 2010. He was born on March 15, 1922, in Orderville, Utah, to Inez Heaton and Frederick Cross Hoyt. He was one of eight siblings.
Milton served in the US Army Air Corp during WWII. While serving in Alaska he met Mary Jane Paulk, and they were married in the St. George Temple on February 28, 1946. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Utah and became a teacher and the principal of schools in Ucon, Coltman, and Fairview, Idaho. Later he received his doctorate in education from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He taught at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, from 1965 until his retirement in 1982.
A faithful member of the LDS church, Milton served as bishop, high councilor, teacher, and Scoutmaster. He especially loved working together with Mary Jane in the Seattle and St. George temples. He loved to study, think deeply, teach, sing, work in family history, and tell a good joke. He was a kind and gentle man and a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Milton is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; four children, Calvin (Chris) Hoyt, St. David, Arizona; Mary (Marvin) Gardner, Pleasant Grove; Daniel Hoyt, Payson; Chuck (Brenda) Hoyt, Puyallup, Washington; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and sister, Hermoine Gibson, Hurricane, Utah. Preceded in death by six siblings.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 11, 2010, at 12:00 noon at the Battle Creek Seventh Ward chapel, 1106 East 200 South, Pleasant Grove, Utah. A viewing will be held at the church from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Payson City Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion.
