| Boyd L. Fugal |
|
October 22, 1921 ~ November 27, 2010
Boyd grew up in Pleasant Grove where he had fond memories of his childhood and the many friends and associates he had throughout the years. Upon graduation he attended Utah State Agricultural College. While in college, World War II interrupted his schooling. Boyd enlisted in the Naval Air Corps in 1942 as an aviation cadet. After ground and combat flight training he was commissioned an Officer and received his Navy Wings as a Naval Aviator. He received the Air Medal and three Gold Stars as a fighter pilot flying the Corsair F4U-4, serving with Bomber Fighter Squadron 86, assigned to the USS Wasp in action against enemy forces in the Pacific. After the war he spent seventeen years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander.
Boyd married his sweetheart Venice Jacob. Their marriage was sealed for eternity on April 20, 1944, in the Salt Lake Temple.
After active duty he returned home and went into the construction business with his father and brothers. After his father’s death, he and his brothers became the principle owners of Niels Fugal Sons Company. Boyd recently received the “Ryberg Award” from the Associated General Contractors of Utah for his “Lifetime Service to the Construction Industry.” Boyd fully understood and learned the blessings of hard work. He was grateful to his father for teaching him the principles of honesty and service.
Boyd has given a lifetime of community and church service. His civic contributions were with the American Legion, Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce and served on the Alpine School District Board of Education. He was president of the Manila Culinary Water Board as well as the Pleasant Grove Irrigation Company for many years. One year, Boyd and Venice were the Grand Marshals for Strawberry Days in Pleasant Grove.
Boyd served as the Bishop of the Manila Ward when he was a young man, followed by being called as the Stake Mission President and for 15 years as the Stake President of the Timpanogos Stake. He served in a Branch Presidency at the MTC and Stake Patriarch of the North Field Stake. Boyd attributes the Mission he and Venice served for two years as the Director of the New York City Visitors Center in Manhattan, as the greatest opportunity he has ever had to express his feelings about the things he held most precious and dear.
Boyd is survived by his wife, Venice, their nine children; Connie (Steve) Hunter, Annette (Mel) Erickson, Daniel (Jill) Fugal, Kathleen (Bruce) Burtenshaw, Guy (Paula) Fugal, Viola (Gale) Gilbert, Celeste (Scott) Grossman, Niels (Tana) Fugal and Patricia (Gregg) Smith, 38 grandchildren and 70 great grandchildren and his sister Joyce (Kent) Giles. He was preceded in death by his parents, Niels and Viola, brothers, Neil and Grant, four sisters, Melba Gooch, Avis West, Edna Holdaway, Lucille Turner and granddaughter Michelle Paul Hall.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at the North Field Stake Center, 105 West 1800 North, Pleasant Grove. A viewing will be held at the North Field Stake Center, Friday evening, December 3, 2010 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior the service at the Stake Center on Saturday. Interment will be in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery. Arrangements made by Olpin Family Mortuary. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinmortuary.com

I had the opportunity to work with Boyd for over 20 years in the Pleasant Grove Kiwanis Club. I cherish my friendship with him. I think he will bypass paradise and go directly on the fasttrack to the Celestial Kingdom. I know thats not exactly how it works, but if anyone could, it would be Boyd. What a great man. A friend, Bill Timothy |

Venice & Family, We were saddened to learn of Boyd's passing. Please accept our heartfelt condolences. What a great man, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. We often remember the times we spent with him and most recently having you out to our place prior to leaving for Indonesia. We are still serving a mission for a few more months. We would like to be there at this time but our thoughts and prayers are with you. We remember many special moments with you and especially when we visited you in New York. We remember your apartment, the center and walking around Manhattan with you. We pray the Lord's spirit to be with you and the family at this time. We look forward to visiting you on our return. Love, John & Mary |

We are sorry to see him go, but glad that he is free from his recent health problems. We had a nice visit with him this summer and are sad that we won't have that opportunity again in this life. He and Venice always made us feel like we were best of friends when we would see them. We are going to be out of town from Thursday afternoon until Saturday evening. We are truly sorry that we can't give our condolences to the family in person. Love, Dennis and Marty Adamson |
| Boyd was a great mentor and example, along with my father. What a generation they were. With Boyd, I laughed with him and struggled with him, and loved his fervor for hard work; he could easily have done me in... I carry his enthusiasm for hard work to this day, and hope he is in the kindest of care in God's graces. My best regards to Venice and the family. Much love and devotion, Larry. |

We are so grateful to have known this wonderful man! In the obituary he is described as a "giant and gentle soul." What a fitting description. He was so kind, loving, and had a wonderful spirit about him. He will be greatly missed! Our love and prayers, Bob and Shelli Sivert (former North Field Fourth ward members, since moved) |
| This is truly a great loss for the family and also the community as a whole. Boyd was and still is a great example of what we were put on this earth to do. We are taught that when we are in the service of our fellow men we are in the service of our God. Boyd was always looking for ways to serve. He will be missed by all who know him but the Lord now has one of his best servants to help with the work in his kingdom. Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Fugal Family at this time. We know the Lord will watch over, protect and comfort Venice and the Fugal Family. Thank you, Lord for sharing Boyd with us. |
| Guy - I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It has always been my pleasure to be associated with such a great company and most importantly a great family that held to the values your father cherished. My prayers and thoughts are with you at this time, God bless you and your entire family. Thank you for your example and friendship. |

Pleasant Grove and the entire world has lost one of the great ones. President Fugal was truly a friend, a hero, and a mentor to many people, he was to me. My association with the Fugal family began in 1952 when our family moved to PG. There hasn't been a time when President Fugal was not involved in the affairs of the community, school, and service organizations. He has always been "President" Fugal. As a youngster growing up in PG I remember he always led by example. He was the first one in the trench and the last one out. To meet with him at formal and informal occassions it was always President. He was so deserving of the title, though I don't think he thought of himself as a titled man. He was one of the "greatest generation". Two stories are told of him and his Corsair. One is of him flying air cover over the USS Missouri when the surrender was signed by the Japanese. The second is of him flying down 200 South (Battle Creek Drive) over the home of his sweetheart as he was shuttling aircraft between home station and another airfield. No one in today's Air Force would attempt such a daring feat. (These stories have to be true as they were told to me by a man of high character). Although we have had a significant loss, the Fugal family continues their tradition of service through the actions of the children and grandchildren. Our condolences to the Fugal family and anyone who was fortunate enough to be able to call him Friend. |

I must first say an AMEN to the comments of Mike and Karen Johnson. We feel truly blessed to have known President Fugal and his family. What a wonderful man and leader in his family, community and church. May the expressions of love and appreciation you receive from your many friends and family buoy you up during this time of grief and adjustment. We too wish we could be back in PG to attend the funeral and express our sympathies in person, but we are in Phoenix Arizona, for the winter, so kindly excuse us. Our prayers and thoughts we send with love and respect. |

Dear Dan and Jill, We were sorry to hear of the passing of your father, Dan. What happy memories we have of serving with you in the Oregon Eugene Mission. You were such wonderful, inspired and inspiring leaders, and we will treasure those days forever. We thought of you as we hung our beautiful, etched ornaments on our tree again this year. Love, Elder and Sister Christensen, Elder and Sister Lee |
| Boyd was and still is a wonderful man, example and spiritual giant. He will be missed for his great spirit but he lives on in the many souls he touched and in his great works he accomplished. Not the least of which is his great and wonderful family. He was a fine example to me and his example makes me try harder every day to be a better person. Thank you brother Boyd Fugal I loved you as a great and wonderful friend. I cannot wait to see you again. |
| Venice, may your sweet memories with Boyd bring strength and peace to your heart. |

Dear Neils & Tana, So sorry to hear about the passing of Neils father Boyd a few days ago. It sounds as though he had a very full and wonderful life here on earth. It is hard to loose a parent but you need to remember all the most wonderful memories and that they are at peace with all their loved ones that have gone before them. Tana, how are your parents? I miss you very much and miss are visits we used have at work. However, I do not miss all the chaos that went along while working at PVH. Are you still with Iasis or did you leave like everyone else has? Our thoughts and prayers are with you both as well as your extended family members during this most difficult time. With our sincere condolences, Dale & Rolene Morris |
