January 14, 1932 ~ March 29, 2013
Francis Eugene “Gene” Labadie, of Pleasant Grove, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2013, from complications following the onset of lymphoma. He was 81.
Gene was born on January 14, 1932, in Wyandotte, MI, to Francis Albert and Evelyn Brown Labadie. He grew up with his three sisters before setting off as a young man on an adventure across the country. He finally settled in California and in 1970, he was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was baptized a member. A short time later he met and married Marlene Gillman.
In 1984, Gene’s career in sales moved the couple’s family to Arlington, TX. There, Gene was able to enjoy his time on the golf course and also work at the Cowboys’ and Rangers’ stadiums. He never missed a home game played by either team.
In 1992, Gene and Marlene chose Pleasant Grove as the best place to raise their younger children. The move from Texas also gave the couple the opportunity to be closer to their adult children and their growing families. Not long after they arrived in Utah, on February 19, 1994, Gene and Marlene were sealed for time and all eternity in the Provo temple – an event that continues to bless their entire family.
It was always clear that Gene had a passion for learning new things. Throughout his life, he kept his mind sharp by completing daily crossword puzzles, reading how-to books, and watching documentaries. He was very artistic and could envision any project he had in mind.
Gene also had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and loved sharing it with EVERYONE he talked to. Besides his love for missionary work, Gene set a great example of service by doing what he could for others. His sense of humor, quick wit, and energetic personality will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his son Brian Labadie, and his sister Barbara Jean Medrano.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene, children Debbie (Randy) Kelemen of St. Helen, MI; Greg Labadie of St. Helen, MI; Jerry Labadie of Melvindale, MI; Machelle Kessinger of San Jose, CA; Ty Sembera of Las Vegas, NV; Dion (Kristina) Labadie of Vancouver, WA; Brenda (Barry) Haug of Flower Mound, TX; Michelle (Damon) Leon, Cologne, Germany; Lisa Labadie of Yankton, SD; Danielle Labadie of Pleasant Grove, UT; and Nanette (David) Vagnoni of Norristown, PA, as well as sisters Jacqueline (Andy) Kelly-Miller of Jupiter, FL, and Judy (John) Kane of Trenton, MI, brother-in-law Raymond Medrano of Sterling Heights, MI, and 29 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 5, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Twelfth Ward Chapel, 828 South Locust Ave. Family and friends may attend a viewing Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and at the church on Friday one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery.
