Lillian LaVon Steadman Tessem

April 23, 1949 ~ December 23, 2013

LaVon Tessem, 64, of Lindon, our loving wife, mother, bestemor, and mormor returned to her loving Father in Heaven on December 23, 2013. She was born April 23, 1949 in Murray, Utah as the fourth and last child to Glenn LaMont Steadman and Lillian Viola Bowles Steadman.

When she was 16 years old, LaVon’s dear mother passed away. This experience led to a deepening testimony for LaVon of Heavenly Father’s Plan of Salvation and the truth that we will see our loved ones again.

She graduated from Jordan High school in 1967. LaVon served a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1970-72 in the Norway Oslo Mission where she met her future husband, Atle Tessem. LaVon and Atle were married and sealed for time and all eternity on May 22nd, 1975 in the Salt Lake City Temple and enjoyed 38 wonderful years together.

LaVon loved spending time with and talking to her five children and 15 grandchildren. She loved Norway, all things Disney, and I Love Lucy. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and dedicated her life to serving her family, friends and neighbors. LaVon had a talent for helping people feel individually valued and loved.

She is survived by her husband, Atle Tessem; her five children, Jeffery Sivert (Kathleen) Tessem, Tiffany Marit Tessem (Jason) Benedict, Melinda Marianne Tessem (Taylor) Jones, Scott Mikal (Jessica) Tessem, and Troy Stefan Tessem; 15 grandchildren; her brothers, Jack (Mary) Steadman and Gary (Karen) Steadman. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Shirley (Fana) Fotofili.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the Lindon Fifth Ward Chapel, 610 West 100 South, Lindon. Family and friends may attend visitations Monday evening from 6-8 PM at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and on Tuesday at the church one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Lindon City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at

I am so sad to hear of LaVon's passing. She was a wonderful person and has always been one of my favorite people to know. I still have the necklace she gave me when she was my Young Women's teacher. It was heart shaped with a mustard seed inside to remind me to have "faith as a mustard seed". I'm so sorry for your loss and will pray for peace and comfort for your family.

My heart is breaking for you. Your mother was one of the most genuine and kind people I have had the privilege to know. She has stepped in and been the mother figure I have needed after my sweet mom passed. I love her. I feel blessed to have known her. Your family is my family. Please let me know what I can do for you. I hope to someday have the same talent she did to love unconditionally. Love, Tenille

I am heartbroken over this news. LaVon meant so much to me, she was a friend when I had none, and made me feel completely loved every time I saw her. She had so much warmth and love to give and never hesitated to give it. I hope she knows how much she meant to me and how much I love her. There are only a few people in the world like her and fortunately I know them from my years living in Lindon. My prayers and thoughts are with the Tessem family. I am so so sorry for your loss.

Atle, I'm so grateful that you were recently able to return to Norway with LaVon and have some time together with your children. It was always evident how much each of these meant to both of you. I pray that Heavenly Father will send you all the comfort necessary to accept this unexpected turn, all the inspiration to know what direction to go next, and all the patience to allow His plan to unfold. God bless you and your family. My thoughts are with you.

I am so greatful that I got to associate with such a Christlike example. She was always so kind and warm and made me feel like a million bucks. I would always make sure to seek her out when I knew she was around. The veil is so very thin when we lose loved ones. I'm so sorry for your temporary loss but so greatful for the plan of salvation. You Tessems are so loved!

LaVon watched me grow up in the Lindon 5th ward. I have always loved her. She always had the best advise and how to look at the positive in things. When I worked at the Orem shopko I would always leave what i was doing to make sure I said hello. I still have the card she wrote me for my wedding, I always look at it and think if her and her warm hugs. She will be deeply missed by everyone that crossed paths with her.
Love you LaVon!

Memories of our girls playing together seems like yesterday. Being back door neighbors, in the day when Lindon was one Stake. Enjoyed those days of our young families. You were always a great example to me and my family. Appreciate your tenderness and love you shared with me.
We will miss you, until we meet again.
Love you,

LaVon came to my door when I needed a friend. I had felt so lost, so despairing. I opened the door, and she opened her arms, taking me into her embrace. It was our first meeting; she was my newly called Relief Society President. She was so full of genuine caring, helping me find courage to pick up shattered pieces of my life. This was in Orem, UT. When LaVon and Atle moved to Lindon, my family also moved to Provo. We visited the Tessem home, and enjoyed a wonderful spirit in their presence. Through the years, the telephone became our "gathering zone"....for the busy-ness of life kept us from going places together. LaVon and I would agree that the miles between didn't matter. We could pick up the conversation as though no time had elapsed at all. I will love her eternally as a mentor, friend, and sister-in-the-gospel. My love reaches out to her dear family. I trust that our Heavenly Father will closely watch and bless them in every need, and light the way ahead.

Atle and Family,

I just heard about LaVon yesterday. I am both shocked and saddened to hear this news. LaVon has been my mother's dear friend and a friend to our whole family. We love her! The years fly by quickly and sadly life got in the way. Unfortunately we did not see her or your family often but she always remained close to our hearts, especially to my mom. I was happy to see LaVon and Atle at my brothers wedding last spring. I got to visit with LaVon for a few minutes and catch up a little. It was fun to watch LaVon and my mom just pick up where they had left off. True friends!

I know that our Heavenly Father has a plan for each of us. I pray that he will bless each of you with peace and comfort as you adjust to his plan. Take comfort in knowing that families are forever and you will be reunited with your sweet wife, mother and grandmother someday!

Love, Angie
