Burdell SmithOctober 2, 1943 ~ November 19, 2017 (age 74)
Roy Burdell Smith, 74, of Pleasant Grove passed away Sunday, November 19, 2017 at his home after a long battle with cancer. Burdell was born October 2, 1943 in Heber City to Roy Blackburn and Minnie Henrie Smith. His mother passed away when Burdell was a young boy. He was then raised by his father and loving step-mother DonnaVieve Nicol Smith. He married Carolyn Kirkman on July 14, 1967 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
When Burdell was a young boy, the family moved to American Fork. Growing up, his family enjoyed camping, boating, hunting and playing sports. He always excelled in every sport that he played. While attending American Fork High School, he lettered in five sports. He went on to attend the College of Southern Utah where he played football and baseball. After completing two years at CSU, He served an LDS Mission to the East Central States Mission (Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia) from 1963-65. Upon completion of his mission, he returned to play baseball at the University of Louisville. He later played for the Cubs semi-pro affiliate in Louisville and was briefly called up to play for the Chicago Cubs. While there, he was drafted and began his service in the Army National Guard, where he served for 10 years and earned the rank of Sergeant First Class.
Burdell was a devoted member of the LDS Church and served faithfully in many callings. He owned a successful family hardware and glass business in Orem for over 20 years.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn of Pleasant Grove, five children: Cory (Julie) Smith, Pleasant Grove; Christina (Cory) Boyer, Webster, NY; Donald (Tecia) Smith, Delta; Tyler Smith, Pecos, TX; Belinda (Todd) Smith, Park City; 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; sister, Colleen (Arlyn) Richards, Crossett, AR and brother, Travis (Jayne) Smith, Oak City. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, sister, Carol Lynn Smith and brother, Garyl Smith.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 11:00 am in the Battlecreek Fourth Ward Chapel, 1106 East 200 South, Pleasant Grove. Family and friends may attend a viewing Monday evening from 6-8 pm at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and also at the church on Tuesday from 9-10:45 am prior to services. Interment will be in the American Fork City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Utah National Guard. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinmortuary.com.
