Welcome to the memorial page for

Clyde Donald Crump

May 14, 1925 ~ January 11, 2018 (age 92)

Our father, grandfather and great grandfather Clyde Donald Crump passed away peacefully at home January 11, 2018 surrounded by family.  He was born May 14, 1925 in Herriman Utah to Reynold Clyde and LaVon Bagnell Crump.  He was raised in Lark, Utah the eldest of three boys and had a wonderful childhood there.  He loved sports of all kinds and spent a considerable amount of time playing baseball, basketball and football.  He loved to hunt and fish with his father, mother and brothers.  He attended school at Lark Elementary and Bingham High School in Copperton, Utah graduating in 1943.  He also received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brigham Young University.

The day before his 18th birthday, Don enlisted in the US Navy and was a Radioman in the Pacific Theater of World War II.  He received a Presidential Citation as his Communications unit developed an amphibious radio station that could be set up in hours after an island was secured.  Don had the privilege of relaying “the war is over” message from the island of Okinawa on VJ day.  He also served in the Korean War as a Communications supervisor on the ship USS Wilkes Barre.

He married Joyce Hansen on September 21, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple.  After the wars, Don and Joyce traveled around the country playing professional baseball in the Yankee and Cubs organizations and as their young family grew.  After baseball, they purchased their home and settled in Pleasant Grove, Utah where he began his career in education and raised their four children.  Don taught and coached several sports at Pleasant Grove High School.  In 1995, Don was inducted into the Utah High School Coaches Hall of Fame for his work as a basketball coach.  He finished his career in school administration at Pleasant Grove High School, Jr. High School and Lehi Jr. High School.

Don was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He served in many positions including being called as the original Bishop of the then Pleasant Grove Eighth Ward.  He served all the members of his ward including the youth and widows. He was a great home teacher and spent many hours helping the disadvantaged around him.  He and Joyce served as temple workers for 17 years.  He was a great servant of the Lord.

During the years that the children were home, Don and Joyce developed a love for geology and archaeology. They spent their vacations exploring many remote places of Utah in pursuit of those hobbies and introduced them to many friends and family.  That along with gardening and sports defined their recreation together throughout their lives.  Don loved to collect rocks.  His hobby of lapidary was a great source of joy.  Don has made hundreds of jewelry items that are enjoyed generationally among his family and friends.
He was an inspiration to all of us as he was a two-time cancer survivor.  He was determined not to let those diseases beat him.  He was a marvelous example of grit and determination.

He is survived by his children: Donald Renn (Cindy) Crump, West Jordan; Wayne Stanley (Holly) Crump, Lehi; Dianne (Wayne) Robison, Lehi; and Daniel Mark (Maureen) Crump, Cody, WY.;  23 Grandchildren and 46 Greatgrandchildren.  Don was preceded in death by his wife: Joyce, his mother, father and two brothers.
