Delbert Weeks Atkinson, 83, returned to his Father in Heaven on August 3, 2018.
Born March 25, 1935, in Pleasant Grove, Utah to Eugene and Edna Weeks Atkinson. Delbert was raised in Pleasant Grove where he graduated from Pleasant Grove High School. After graduation, he joined the United States Army during the Korean War. Delbert married Carol Lee Richins in 1957 and they welcomed four daughters into their family. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 16, 1964. While raising his family he graduated from Brigham Young University with a BS degree in Zoology and later continued his education in graduate school. Delbert began a 30-year career with the Division of Wildlife Resources. During his career he was a Game Warden in various cities in Utah; and later became supervisor over Law Enforcement in the Central Division. Not only did he have a career in DWR, he had a military career in the Army where his reserve unit, the 259th Quartermaster Battalion, was activated during the Vietnam War. Upon his return he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He served 41 years in the Army and the Reserve retiring with the rank of Major. Delbert later married Karla Draney, becoming the stepfather to two daughters and one son.
Delbert enjoyed spending time with all his family, especially fly fishing on the Provo River. He is preceded in death by his wife Karla; daughter, JaNele; stepdaughter, Jeanna; grandchild, Chantel; brother, Tom; and his parents. Survived by daughters Debbie Osborne, Malynda Cloward, Laurie Davis; stepdaughter, Karlin (Dennis) Sager; stepson, Shane Draney; 18 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren; brother Lloyd (Colleen) Atkinson; and sister Beverly Jean (Larry) Hansen.
Funeral services will held Friday, August 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Manila Fifth Ward Chapel, 3396 North 900 West, Pleasant Grove. Family and friends may attend a viewing Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and at the church on Friday from 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 72. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinmortuary.com.
