Earl LeGrand Thomas, 98, of Lehi passed away Saturday, December 21, 2019 at the Mervyn Sharp Bennion Central Utah Veterans Center in Payson. Earl was born November 10, 1921 in Lehi to Morris Earl and Savina Checketts Thomas. He married Gladys Eleanor Colledge on June 14, 1941 in Lehi. Their marriage was later solemnized in Salt Lake City Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on January 24, 1964.
Earl grew up in Lehi and attended schools there. As a young man Earl worked for the CCC building roads in both Spanish Fork and Payson Canyon. When WWII broke out, he enlisted in the U S Army and served in the Pacific Theater. Earl’s first child was born March 13, 1943. He didn’t lay eyes on his daughter Earlene until December 19, 1945 upon his return from the war. He then worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and then at Geneva Steel where he worked for over 38 years.
Earl was an avid U of U sports fan. He took up running after his retirement and completed over 10 marathons. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and looked forward to these outings with his family.
He is survived by his three children: Sue (Perry) Rigby, Ed Thomas and Jeff (Becky) Thomas, son-in-law, Craig Hansen; 21 grandchildren and many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren and one sister, LaRene Job. He was preceded in death by his sweetheart, Gladys; daughter, Earlene Hansen; daughter’s-in-law: Sharolyn Thomas and Geri Thomas and granddaughter, Kelli Jo Hansen Sunday.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 27, 2019 at 11:00 am in the Lehi Seventh Ward Chapel, 1364 West 1870 North, Lehi where family and friends may attend a viewing from 9:30-10:45 am prior to services. Interment will be in the Lehi City Cemetery with military honors. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinmortuary.com.
