At the age of 94, Florence May Mattey Burt, our beloved mother, auntie, grandmother, great-grandmother, passed from this earthly life, surrounded by her family, and joined her eternal companion on Thursday, March 1, 2018. What a joyous reunion that must have been! Florence was born on September 21, 1923 in San Diego, California, to Sigmund Mattey and Ellen Martha Dodge. She was the youngest of 4 children. She went from a life with no electricity to the world we live in today.
Florence graduated from La Jolla High School in 1941.
Florence met her husband to be when she was 13 years old. She married Kay Ortho Burt on September 19, 1942 in San Diego. They were baptized and confirmed members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on April 24, 1952 and then on November, 9, 1954 they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple.
Florence and K O owned a well drilling business for 34 years and shared a life packed with adventures as they moved their family around the south west drilling wells. They lived in California, Nevada, Arizona, and finally settled in Utah. After the loss of her beloved husband, Florence designed and built a home in Lindon, UT where she lived until 2015. Florence moved to the Salt Lake Valley where she lived for the rest of her life. They were the parents of three children—two sons and one daughter who have cherished the memories they have of their parents.
Florence cherished her membership in the Church and served in many leadership positions, but one of her favorite callings was teaching cooking classes in Relief Society Homemaking Meetings. She was also called to serve as part of the Universal Data Extraction program for several years, where she assisted in creating a digital database for use in family history research.
Florence loved spending time with her family and they created many memories while working the family business, enjoying Disney Land vacations, and just being together in the outdoors exploring the deserts of south east Utah and fishing trips to the Arizona White Mountains. One of Florence’s favorite pass times was reading; she had an extensive library and always encouraged her family to read. Florence enjoyed reading and studying church history. She and her sister in-law Dottie Carrasco were able to travel to Nauvoo and visit LDS Church history and Civil War sites.
Florence was a dedicated mother to her children and she treasured her sweet little dog Hailey. She will be remembered for her incredible generosity, delicious cooking and her ability to make everyone feel welcome in her home.
She is survived by her children, Charles “Stoney” (Susan), Burt; Jim “Buff” (Francis) Burt, Charlene Burt; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, 7 foster great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Kay Ortho Burt; her sister’s Ollie Chandler and Marie Underwood; her brother Charles Chandler; her daughter Deborah Kay Burt, granddaughter Kristy Burt and nephew Scott Carrasco.
Special thanks to niece Jan & Kevin Cameron, niece Arlene & Ron Herbert and dear friend Sharon Abegglen for their tender loving care and devotion of Florence through the past years.
