Ruth Evelyn Newey, a long-time resident of the Los Lunas/Albuquerque area, died Thursday the 10th of May at Point Meadows Rehab in Lehi, Utah.
Born on May 5th, 1930 in Georgetown, TX. Ruth loved school; she graduated as Salutatorian of the 1948 Leander Texas High School. After raising 7 children she returned to school and graduated with an Associate of Applied Science in General Studies in 1992 from the University of New Mexico.
Ruth traveled as a new bride with her late husband Lester R. Newey for 20 years as a military wife. They were stationed in Alaska, Utah, Germany, France, Texas, New Mexico and California. They later settled in Los Lunas, NM where most of their children grew up.
Ruth was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving as Relief Society and Primary President. Her favorite calling was being a Den Mother overseeing all her boys through Webelos. She was a Den Mother for over 20 years and received the District Award of Merit for her service.
Ruth taught as a substitute teacher for several years in Los Lunas, and loved the opportunity to work with children.
Even when getting around became difficult for Ruth, she never steered away from doing service. She was an active member of the welcoming committees at the retirement homes where she lived. Her favorite thing to do in her spare time in her final years was to make caps for newborns which were donated to local hospitals.
Ruth loved to bowl, taking up WII bowling in her later years. Ruth enjoyed many other games, especially card games like cribbage.
Ruth was the first of 6 children of William Milburn Fox and Ruby Mae Bowen Fox. Ruth is survived by her siblings Ruby Alice Fox Nowlin and Jimmy Ray Fox of Texas; and 7 children - Robert Michael Newey, Brenda Kay Newey, Cory Ray Newey, Scott Craig Newey, Brian Jay Newey, Paul Lynn Newey and Joel Reed Newey. She was blessed with 22 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Mary Fox, brother Billy Fox and sister Basey Joan Schaeffer.
A memorial service will be held for Ruth on Friday Jun 22, 2018 at 10 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Chapel in Los Lunas, NM. Her remains will be laid to rest later that day in Santa Fe, NM at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
