Brett Delayne Wells, aged 52, was born on July 1st, 1971, at McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden, UT, to Chana Liane (Smith) Wells and Dee Layne Wells when they lived in Clearfield, UT.
Brett passed away early morning on June 8th, 2024 in Salt Lake City where he lived in an accident involving only his car, nobody else was hurt. As a baby, he stayed some time with his grandmother, Lora Smith. Throughout his life, he enjoyed visiting her and taking his children to visit her. Brett enjoyed hanging out with his Grandpa Cliff Smith in his later years as well. Both Cliff and Lora Smith preceded him in death; he missed them dearly.
Brett worked for Macey’s (Pleasant Grove), Dentrix (American Fork), Xactware (Orem), Novell (Provo), Axis 41 (Salt Lake City), and several other computer companies throughout his lifetime. He loved computers so much. He was also proud and thankful that his mom, Chana, had painstakingly helped him gain his Eagle Scout and obtain his first two jobs. Brett was always looking for the next best thing technology wise. Brett loved to engage in passionate commentary online about subjects he was interested in. He made many great friends this way who adored his frequent jokes and witty rebuttals. He was well-known and respected in his online community for his dedication and incredible web design skills.
One of Brett’s favorite hobbies was to design objects on his computer and then bring them to life with his 3D printers; even getting on the news once in 2020 for his generous donation of 3D printed masks to the local police department. In his younger years, Brett was honored that his buddies nicknamed him MacGyver; with great ingenuity and skill he would fix his friends computers and machines, as well as his own. He decided to keep the nickname and would often design clasps, spacers, and all sorts of other things just to fix or improve his everyday items. He also helped his son when he had tech problems; once the charging port on his son’s laptop had broken, and he had fixed it within an hour. On his home he had installed solar panels by himself; He was truly a handyman like his father Dee.
Brett married Christy Wells in 1995. They had two beautiful children together. He helped Christy win a NHS Provo Community Block Grant by his words being shouted out from his computer every now and again stating, “Christy, you are going to win this!” Their project won $25,000 plus another $10,000 dollars and improved over 16 houses. Mayor Stewart wanted them to help the second runners up with a park upgrade that had been proposed in the neighborhood next to theirs, so they did. Brett was a big contributor in helping out with the huge community upgrades. He felt it was one of the biggest accomplishments he’d ever been a part of.
Later Brett and Christy divorced. He loved his children, family and friends, and they also loved him. He will be deeply missed.
In the end he was very physically ill, hospitalized, then released to home 4 days before his passing. His medications seemed to have stopped working as well as they had been for the past several years and he gradually became very ill again. He struggled with liver disease, recurrent infections, and frequent hospitalizations. Even with all this he pushed on as best he could with the support of those he was closest to. His doctors told him he had two years left to live if he was lucky in February 2019, that was five years ago.
Our hearts are broken and filled with sorrow. Brett is survived by his two children, Tia and Takota Wells, his parents Dee and Chana Wells, and his sisters Carey Milne, Alisha Bush, and Chandee Wells.
The graveside service will be held Thursday, July 18, 2024 in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery (on cemetery road off of 100 West 550 North), and a potluck style luncheon will be held afterwards at the Manila Discovery Park pavilion (Manila Park East 1550 N 100 E) Pleasant Grove, Utah.
