Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Delna Evans Macfarlane, passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2022. We always knew Mom would choose Sunday, her favorite day, for her passing. She was born June 23, 1929 in the small coal mining town of Castle Gate, Utah to Vivian Marguerite Harris Evans and Oscar Whimpey Evans. She married Jay Gordon Macfarlane on June 24, 1954 in the Salt Lake Temple.
In grade school, her family moved to Pleasant Grove. As the eldest child, she was often expected to be the boy on the farm. With her sisters Joyce and Myrlene, and her brothers, Lionel and Clinton, she lived an active life.
Mom graduated from BYU with a teaching degree. She served three missions for her church, two with her husband, Jay. She was relief society president at least twice, raised four independent-minded kids, was valedictorian of Pleasant Grove High School in 1947, an accomplished musician, handy man extraordinaire, and was loved by everyone she ever met. She loved writing and genealogy, authoring several books on her ancestors. She loved the fact she was of Welsh ancestry and was fascinated with the culture. But that also held true for her Swedish and English ancestors.
She could do anything, especially at the last minute. She was so busy she lived a life of triage in service to others. She was very interested in chemistry and could have been a famous chemistry professor if she had so chosen. Rather, she chose to be a mother and, when called, relief Society President or other positions the church asked of her though not necessarily in that order.
She is survived by her four children, Gary Evans Macfarlane (Bobbi Calentine), Lynette (Arnold) Oliphant, Jaylene Macfarlane, and Carol Macfarlane (Max Broadhead) She is also survived by her sister Joyce (Harold) Winkler and her two brothers Lionel (Tana) Evans and Clint (Eileen) Evans. She has four grandchildren—Eugene, Spencer, Sarah, and Heidi--and nine great grandchildren—Chloe, Claire, Brenden, Cady, Geni, Riona, Emma, Erlina, and Izzy. We all miss her.
