Evalyn Sue Bernard Howland, 80, peacefully passed away on September 23, 2021, reuniting her with Frank, her husband and eternal companion. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Evalyn was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she served in Primary, and in the American Fork Temple Nursery. This brought her much joy as she served the Lord and those around her.
Evalyn was born in Blytheville, Arkansas on June 30, 1941 to Bennett Owen and Emma Sue (Stewart) Bernard. The following year her family moved to Winslow, Arizona where her father went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad. They moved frequently between Winslow and Barstow, California. They always made their moves by train since they did not own a car until Evalyn was in 6th Grade. In 1953, they moved to Los Angeles, California where she enjoyed being a teenager in the 50’s. She graduated from Montebello High School in 1959.
Evalyn attended Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona for her first year of college and then transferred to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. In 1964, she received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. The last day of her student teaching in Fort Worth was the day President Kennedy was shot. School was dismissed immediately and did not reconvene until after his burial.
Evalyn first married Phillip Amsler Eversberg in 1964. From that unity, Phillip Amsler was born in 1965 and Virginia (Ginni) Sue was born in 1969.
Evalyn married Frank, the love of her life, in La Junta, Colorado in on May 31, 1972. Frank, father to John and Elizabeth, adopted Phillip and Ginni soon after the marriage. After joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Denver, Colorado Temple on July 11, 1987.
Evalyn loved teaching school for 32 years in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Rye, La Junta, Iliff and Crook, Colorado. She retired from teaching at Caliche Elementary School in the summer of 1996 to spend time with her family.
Evalyn will be greatly missed by her brothers, Mike (Annette) Bernard, Owen (Frances) Bernard, her children, Ginni (HF) Van Horn, Phillip (Laura), John (Cathy), Elizabeth Reid, 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
We, as her children, would like to express our love and appreciation for her example of the many lasting relationships she maintained throughout her life.
