Obituary

James Ernest Hindley, 90, of Pleasant Grove passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at his home.   Jim was born January 31, 1931 in Lehi to Ernest and Melba Cook Hindley.  He married Ruby Jane Elsmore on February 28, 1951 in Orem and recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.   Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Jim grew up in American Fork where he was an avid baseball, basketball and track member. He was a member of the FFA and received a scholarship to USU. He graduated from American Fork High School in 1949.   He attended Utah State University before his induction to the U S Army during the Korean Conflict.   He was stationed in Germany during that time as a Radio Operator.   When Jim returned from the service he attended Brigham Young University where he received a BS in Agriculture.

The family settled in Pleasant Grove until 1973 when Jim’s work for the U S Department of Agriculture required the family to live in many states in the country.   He retired in 1988 after 30+ years of service when he and Ruby came home to Pleasant Grove.  In their retirement years, Ruby and Jim traveled to the far ends of the earth.

Jim was active in many civic endeavors which included the Pleasant Grove Jaycee’s Chapter and also served as President of the Strawberry Days Committee.  While serving as the President, he helped to improve the city and local businesses.  He was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served faithfully in many callings during his life.

He is survived by his wife Ruby Jane of Pleasant Grove; five daughters: Sherrie (Les) Brown, Janie (Dave) Pollmann, Leslie (Steve) Crick, Jackie Smola and Jennifer (Tom) Jones; 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; siblings: Earl (Edythe) Hindley and Linda Hindley.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his son James Ernest Hindley Jr., his sister Bonnie Jean Hindley, three grandchildren: James Ryan Brown, Sara Crick, Amanda Crick and two great grandchildren: Bailey Sage Meola and Hanna Donn Gums.
