Merrill was born August 12, 1964 in Ukiah CA and passed away February 17, 2020 in Provo, Utah following a courageous battle with kidney cancer.
He graduated from Ukiah High School in 1982. As a young man he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Cleveland and Akron, Ohio missions. Merrill worked for CDF as a firefighter which led him to move to Utah to take some fire science courses. He met his wife, Lynelle, in Utah and knew right away that she was his one.
Merrill and his family settled in Pleasant Grove in 1995. His love for the fire service continued as a volunteer for the Pleasant Grove/Lindon Fire department. As the department transitioned to paid staffing, Merrill worked his way up to Lieutenant and retired in June 2018 after 16 years of service.
He also worked for the City of Orem water department full time. Merrill was a true leader whether it was as a mentor at work, serving in Boy Scouts where he shared his love of the outdoors, teaching CPR to the community, refereeing volleyball, or keeping girls safe at girls camp year after year. He lived his life full of selfless service.
He spent many summers backpacking in the Uintah mountains with scouts and family members. Merrill enjoyed his quiet time fishing.
Merrill is survived by his wife, Lynelle, son, Brandon (Tara), daughter, Britnie, and 1 grandson. Also surviving are his parents David and Cathy Haas, sisters Laurale, Tina (Gary), Cheryl (Randy), Krista, Andrea, April (Dave), Katie, brother Brent, and 41 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 24, 2020 at the Pleasant Grove, Grove Creek Stake Center, 1176 North 730 East, where family and friends may attend a viewing from 9:00 – 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
