Paul Elwood Allen, 81, died peacefully at home in Pleasant Grove, Utah, on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, with his wife Judy and three of his daughters by his side.

Paul was born on March 19, 1940, to Elwood and Mildred Allen. He learned how to work early in life, delivering groceries to customers of Allen’s IGA Market for his father. As a young man, Paul was involved in scouting, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He also enjoyed cruising in his 1957 Chevy up the Alpine Loop.

Paul, nicknamed “Horse,” was a 3-year All-State athlete starting when he was just 15 years old and a 1-year All-American athlete in football at Pleasant Grove High School. Known as “Mr. Inside” because of his ability to run through tackles up the middle of the field, Paul went on to play football for BYU from 1958 through 1961. Years after his football career was over, Paul was awarded the 2014 Legacy Jet Award. Recognizing his skill as a return specialist, the Jet Award honored Paul’s 1961 senior season when he averaged 40.1 yards per return, a NCAA record he still holds today.

While his athletic career was legendary in Pleasant Grove, it was his family life that was rich. Paul married his high school sweetheart, Judy Jolley, on June 15, 1960, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They raised a family of six children in Pleasant Grove, Arizona and Texas, moving back several years ago to Paul’s family home with a back porch facing Mt. Timpanogos.

Paul’s life was marked by hard work, service in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including as Bishop of the 5th Ward, support of his family, and love for his wife. He was a solid cook, had a beautiful bass voice he harmonized with his father’s singing in the Timpanogos Chorale, loved being outside in the sun, was an avid but dispassionate football fan, and was rarely seen outside without aviator sunglasses. Steady, wise, and always exhibiting unconditional love, Paul is adored by his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His physical presence always loomed large, but his heart was even bigger.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judy Kay Jolley Allen; five (5) daughters: Julie (Kelly) Beck, Kristie (Eric) Frost, Jennifer (Chuck) Baker, Alyson Allen and Angela (Vamarasi) Ieli; his sister, Janice (Kay) Thorne; his sister-in-law, Pamela (Kent) Allen; thirteen (13) grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Elwood and Mildred Allen; his brother, Kent (Pam) Allen; and his son, John Paul Allen.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 5, 2022, at 11:00 am in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 332 East 500 North, Pleasant Grove, Utah.  Family and friends may attend a viewing Friday evening, March 4, 2022 from 6-8 pm at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and at the church on Saturday one hour prior to services..
