Our dearest mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Phyllis Garland West passed away September 18, 2021 at her home in Pleasant Grove surrounded by family.
Phyllis was born April 5, 1935, in Bedford, Indiana-the fifth of seven children, to Cornelius Garland and Myrtle Corder Garland.
Phyllis grew up in a small, modest home in a hollow in Bedford, Indiana. They used to carry water to their home in buckets from a spring since they didn't have in-home plumbing. She and her siblings loved going to the nearby park where she eventually met her future sweetheart, David while he was serving his mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Great Lakes Mission. Phyllis and members of her family were baptized into the church after being taught by Elder West and his companion. After his mission, David called and asked Phyllis to marry him over the phone to which Phyllis said yes. After finishing her senior year, David went out to Indiana to bring his future bride to Utah. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 4, 1953. They were happily married until David's death in 2002, just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Phyllis was known and remembered for her gentle and kind manner. She was always pleasant and content and never wanted to impose on others.
She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. She and David served together as missionaries in the New Mexico, Albuquerque Mission from 1987-1988. They also served many years together as ordinance workers in the both the Provo and Mt Timpanogos Temples.
She is survived by nine children: Michael (Penny) West, Kim (Debbie) West, Kevin West, Mark (Kayleen) West, Holly (Tim) Beavers, Debbie (Bob) Crow, Robin (Mark) Whittle, Lance (Leslie) West, Cindy (James) Mena, Lenora Murphy; 31 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, her brother Clifford (Janet) Garland, her sister, Lucille Garland Rigby.
She was preceded in death by her sweetheart, David Fisher West, her parents, 4 siblings, granddaughter, Anna Marie Beavers, and 2 daughter's-in-law, Kathleen Bennett West and Geniel Peterson West.
She leaves a legacy of faithfulness and love. We will miss you until we meet again.
