Rulon Junior Wells graduated from this mortal life in the early morning hours of September 9, 2021, at the age of 91, under the loving care of his wife, Hannelore (Lori) Wells.
Dad was born on January 30, 1930 in Los Angeles, California. The first child of Carrol Christina Fautin Wells and Rulon Elvie Wells. He lived in Los Angeles until he was 12 enjoying the companionship of many of his fathers brothers and their families. To differentiate him from his father, his family called him Junior. His early appetite for reading books and magazines helped lay the foundation for his great intellect. In early 1942 his family moved back to their Utah roots and settled in Lindon, Utah. Two younger sisters Lila and Linda whom he loved, were added to the family.
As a young boy, dad worked hard on his family's little farm as well as for the neighbors. His father would let him work for others, only when the work on the family property was completed. While attending Pleasant Grove High School he was active in football and basketball.
In 1949 he enlisted in the US Army for a year, then joined the US Navy in 1950 at the outbreak of the Korean War. In 1955 while home on leave he married Louise Larsen of Provo and they added three boys, Mike, Scott and Chris to their family. The family was Sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1966. Dad and mom divorced in 1978.
Dad was honorably discharged from the navy in 1960. He continued to serve in the Naval reserve until he retired in 1986. Upon his return to Utah, he began his teaching career at the Utah Technical College. He specialized in electronics technology. During the summers he worked for US Geneva Steel and Hercules Powder companies. He later would end up writing training courses and apprentice programs for both of these companies as well as Signetics.
In 1971, he was appointed Chairman of the Electrical and Automation department. In 1973, he was also appointed to serve on the Faculty Advisory Committee which assisted in the planning of the new Orem Campus and is now known as Utah Valley University. While teaching full time, dad continued his education and earned his BS and MS degrees at BYU. Dad was chosen as Teacher of Year for the college in 1984. At the time of his retirement from the College in 1987, he was the Associate Dean of Technology.
Rulon met Hannelore (Lori) Winkler at the local bowling league. They were married in 1988, and sealed in the Provo Utah Temple in 1990. They loved to travel together either on his motorcycle cruiser or in the motor home. They often went to Germany to visit with her family.
Dad had several heart attacks, heart bypass surgery and lung cancer since retiring. After his last heart attack he had some damage to the speech area of the brain which made it difficult for him to communicate and caused a significant reduction in his physical activity. We call it a miracle and blessing that he lived till 91.
Dad loved to go hunting, fishing and camping. We could never beat him at card games. Dad loved others and always found ways to help those who were discouraged and in a tough way. When his twin grandchildren were born, he would show up every few weeks with a large package of diapers. He served in several bishoprics as a clerk and a counselor. He showed love by serving others just as Christ did.
We are so happy that dad is free from his disabled mortal body! No doubt he is finding ways to teach, serve and lift others. He will be missed, but we are sure he was welcomed by his parents and younger sister Lila Jensen and many others who preceded him in death.
He leaves behind his three sons from his first marriage, Mike (Marie) Wells, Scott (Leah)Wells, Chris (Teresa) Wells, 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. His wife Hannelore Wells, her children, Dale Stevens, Michelle Brown, and (Dave) and Tanya Johnson, 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
